Naota is an average kid living an average life (apart from the fact his older brother’s ex-girlfriend, Mamimi, seems to have the hots for him) in Mabase, an average town in Japan (apart from the presence of a giant factory shaped like a steam iron, owned by the enigmatic Medical Mechanica corporation). But things start to change in the first episode when he gets run over, given CPR, and then pummled by Haruko Haruhara, a crazy pink-haired girl who rides a Vespa scooter and wields a Rickenbacker bass guitar like a weapon. If you think FLCL is weird already, you may want to sit down. After the confrontation, Naota grows a strange bump on his head, and finds Haruko is following him around for some reason. She even moves into Naota’s home as a live-in housekeeper. Naota is put-off by his father’s immaturity (rambling about Naota’s supposed ‘relationships’ with Haruko and Mamimi) and Haruko’s eccentricity. Later that day, Naota meets with Mamimi on the bridge, and somehow breaks the news that his brother, Tasuka, has a new girlfriend in America. Distraught by the dramatic effect this news has on Mamimi, Naota is even more shocked when two robots (one with a TV for a head, the other shaped like a disembodied arm) jump out of the bump on his head and start fighting for no apparent reason, with Naota stuck to the TV-headed robot. The TV-headed robot eventually wins, when Haruko shows up to subdue it. It looks like things are back to normal… except Naota now has a self-proclaimed alien and a robot living with him.
