Episode Two: Betrayal

Haruhara Haruko was sitting in a strange room on some decidedly far-off planet, lying on the bed that had been “given” her. Other than the bed there wasn’t much to differentiate this room from those one might find in any apartment complex in the galaxy. The walls were bare, there was no furniture, and the only light came from an outdated setting in the middle of the ceiling, and not from the small window that looked out on some old buildings that made it look like whatever was going on there, it wasn’t going well. Haruko had looked out that window for about ten minutes before lying on the bed and going to sleep. She had just woken up and assumed it to be night on her side of the planet, for it was all dark outside the window. So what do I do now? wondered Haruko. She was just thinking of getting up to try an escape from the window when a knock came from the door.
Haruko sighed. “Who is it?” she said sarcastically, as though she lived here.
“Mr. Ohshika would like to see you.”
“Tell him I’m busy cleaning, you guys left a terrible mess.” said Haruko.
The guard outside frowned. “He has an interesting proposal for you.” he informed her.
“Really? What is it?”
“Mr. Ohshika would like to tell you himself.” said the guard and then he waited a bit.
“Ok, I’m coming, happy?” said Haruko. She heard the lock click so she swung the door open and walked out. “Hey there.”
“Mr. Ohshika will be very happy you came.” said the guard as Haruko looked him up and down.
“Yeah, where is he, anyway?” she replied, looking around.
“Follow me.”
The guard lead, not to the largest room in what was obviously a standard apartment complex, but to a room two floors up and seemingly directly above the one in which Haruko had been. The door was open, and as they approached they could hear the sound from some old show. It sounded stupid. When they reached the open doorway, Haruko walked past it and kept going until she realized that her guide had stopped right in front of it. “In here, please.” he said and gestured towards the room.
“Really? Ok.” said Haruko and she walked inside, grabbing the door handle as she went.
“Leave it open,” said the strong, fair-haired man she had seen on the space station, “just in case.” Haruko let go and walked into the room.
“Hmm…” Haruko was surveying the room, which was not very different from the one she had been in, other than the fact that it was well-furnished for someone who was obviously an anime fan. The walls were covered with posters for various animes and in the corner stood a bookshelf crammed with quite a collection of manga. There was a small table in the middle of the room, set low so that one would have to kneel to eat at it. At the table sat a man who, Haruko could easily guess, was the leader of this group, whoever they were.
“You were probably expecting something else.” he said as Haruko looked around. “We like to keep this room as simple as possible. No doubt if your Galaxy Space Police come knocking they will search the biggest, most lavish rooms looking for me, and instead they will find a good number of well-trained guards, ready to meet them.” said the man, smiling. “But enough about the plans for my safety, please, sit down.” Haruko sat and the man’s smile grew wider. “My name is Ohshika Ken-ichi, but please, call me Ken.”
“Haruhara Haruko. Pleasure.” added Haruko, sticking out her hand.
Mr. Ohshika looked puzzled just long enough for Haruko to notice then said, “Of course, you have been trained to shake hands, very well.” And he grasped Haruko’s hand and shook. “And now that the formalities are over, I have an interesting proposition for you, Haruhara Haruko.”
“Yeah, so I’ve heard.”
“I want you,” he continued, “to join me and my group of freedom fighters. We are called Desecration.”
“Ahh, so you guys want me to join up, to become one of you.”
“Only temporarily.” replied Ohshika, “We want you to do something for us. When we attacked your academy we were trying to obtain a secret file kept there. The mission obviously failed, but that is where you can help us. You could return to the Galaxy Space Police Brotherhood’s academy and retrieve the file.”
“How do you know I won’t just stay there after you’ve dropped me off?”
“You certainly could. But we really want this file, and when we next attempt to retrieve it we may look you up and see if you can help us then.”
“And if I’m caught?”
“If you’re caught, then you managed to escape us on your own, talented person as you are. But I’m fairly confident that you won’t be caught. I believe in you.” Mr. Ohshika smiled again, and went on. “We will affectively train you for the mission ahead. We expect you to return in twenty-six hours with a grace period of another hour in case anything goes wrong. Well, what do you say?” Haruko ran her hands through her hair, squinted her eyes, and contemplated this turn of events.

Haruko sat with her hands on the controls of a highly advanced stealth ship looking at her position on the screen just off her left side. She remembered the conversation she had with Ohshika before she had began her training. “You know how to pilot?… Oh, new recruit eh?… Doesn’t matter, we’ll give you a G-821, they’re easy enough to pilot, Mr. Manabe’s ten-year-old son’s got it down… Now, I’ll bet you know of the security in the H wing where you were… Yes, of course, and it’s similar for the other wings, F, D, and C, that you’ll be passing through… Don’t worry our technician will get you up to date on the security protecting your commander’s office… And you’re going to need a good weapon in case you’re discovered on your way back… Well that should be it… Good luck.”

The door to Haruko’s former commander’s office slid open quickly and silently. Well, that was easier than I thought, reflected Haruko as she stepped inside and looked around. The office was empty; everyone was sleeping in the academy. Haruko instantly spotted the “vault” disguised to look like the lighting and electricity panel on the right side of the wall. Haruko checked the time. She only had eleven hours left before she was expected back. She walked up to the vault and used an electric key-jogger to gain access. She grabbed the file that was just behind the first, then she closed the vault and dashed outside. Once she had relocked the door to the office she looked at the file in her hands to confirm it was the correct one. The label on the file read: “Top Secret: Atomsk.”
Haruko began to run back through the academy’s space station with the file in her hands. As she passed the entrance from C wing to D wing she paused to catch her breath and to reactivate the disabled security in C wing. Haruko picked up the pace as she dashed through the D and F wings, stopping only to reactivate the security. As she ran, she thought of what she knew about Atomsk. Haruko had heard only a small amount of information on Atomsk during her enemy tactics classes at the academy from which she was now fleeing. He had been described as a new threat to the Galaxy Space Police Brotherhood, a being with so much N.O. power that he could steal entire planets, making him a dangerous enemy for the Galaxy Space Police to deal with.
As Haruko piloted the G-821 back towards the planet on which Desecration was stationed, she thought about the file that was resting on the ship’s floor. Atomsk, she thought to herself, the King of Pirates, now there’s a guy with some power. I wonder if I can learn that power. Haruhara Haruko adjusted the controls and settled herself in for the journey back. She was suddenly excited to be heading back to the planet. Haruko had an idea. She had a couple things to ask Mr. Ohshika… a couple things she needed to learn.
