Naotas guitar.

Discuss the metaphorical and hidden meanings behind the series.

Naotas guitar.

Postby sesse » Sat Jan 07, 2006 1:52 am

So in episode 4 Raharu pulled out a guitar out of Naotos head and handed it to him and when he asked what it was, she just said "Its your guitar Takkun~" or something. And I have been thinking or not about ..the ..fact ... that ... I don't think that Raharu has spare guitars in her extraterrestrial garage so that whenever she finds a kid with abnormally high N.O. who lives in a town where a bomb in the form of a baseball is headed to, she can just transfer it from her garage to her current whereabouts with kids NO and give it to him. I think with her furi kuri furi kura .. kuraa kuraa hurraa magic.. she brings out a guitar which represents the characteristics of the person (Reference to people who comtemplated on the left handed bass guitar and harukos character). Thats why when she did it on Amarao it didnt come out properly. Because he has small NO and since. .. lets say its also a representation of penis size... it was a small uncomplete guitar. And I think it is also the reason why all the girls in the command center had nose bleeds and Amarao said "But he is only a kid." I am pretty positive that it is alluded to penis size.

I hope I was able to word out my thoughts ..ehh... understandable? I dont think I made much sense but you should be able to pick up my idea.

I think your idea of those objects representing their characteristics is pretty good... but does it really indicate that..? If you look at Naotos guitar, it isn't anything like him... That guitar poses a wild, upbeat, cool and eccentric quality... But does it really mean that too ..? What if there is a hidden feature not seen to the viewer..

We all know Naota, isn't the best to show his feelings, and when he does, he ends up complaining and arguing... And another factor to point out is he keeps an "I don't care" attitude almost all the time.. This is why a lot of his friends and family walk through him most of time when he tries to be serious...

"You can't hit the ball if you don't try" says Haruko... Maybe we all have something inside us, that we either don't know exists or don't want to let out... Haruko is showing Naota, that if you just sit around say everything is just "ordinary", and don't do anything about it, then your just as "ordinary" as the things you speak as are "ordinary".

Maybe the guitar represents a completeness of oneself and there personal qualities they abide too... Natoa deep down must of had this urge to get ahead of his life and do things that weren't "ordinary" in the city he lived in... And maybe Amarao's got a small guitar because he wasn't past the stage of being selfish and only thinking about his life and work... For gods sakes he asks for a recite for that loaf of break at Natoas father's store hahahaha...

But for the penis thing... Yeah I seen this discussed from what I've been looking through... Maybe they wanted to reference that as something humorous for the viewer... Showing, and not telling it... Nothing else I can see other than that...

naota's guitar

Postby kiss_army » Sun Jan 08, 2006 7:24 pm

haruko pulls a guitar out of naota's head in the 4th episode. the guitar symbolizes naota's manliness, it symbolizes his "maturity." later she also pulls a guitar out of commander amarao's head, which shows that he never matured into a real man, he never knew love & he let his job completely take over his life. that obviously isn't the "mature" thing to do. he also keeps on hitting on kitsurabami^-^, he's not "mature" enough to realize...she hates his guts. he completely disgusts her. maybe if he lost the eyebrows....no that happened to & it wasn't an improvement^-^ he kept trying to give advise to naota, which didnt help, especially the eyebrows he gave him. amarao seems to be pretty confident in himself, but deep down he's a whiney little puss^-^ it's exactly the opposite with naota, he keeps telling himself that he doesnt know how to work things out, but does & never realizes it. he is very manly for his age but still a child nonetheless....& for the record, i really dont thing the guitar has ANYTHING to do with naota's penis...he's 12 years old for god's sake^-^

Actually, sesse is completely right. The guitars in FLCL are definitely an allusion to penises (so are the bats, and the things that come out of naota's head).

kiss_army, a 12 year old boy's life is all about penises. It's their hormonal prime, they're going through puberty, and sex is always in the back of their mind. That's what FLCL is about. ;)

For example, in episode 5 Haruko goes into a minute-long rant about guitar skills before pouncing Naota down on his bed in some what of an erotic position.
Naota: "It's dangerous to go waving that thing [her guitar] around."
Haruko: "Use your guitar again. One more time, Ta-kun. ... Kaking ... You did it so great last time."
Naota: "Not interested."
Haruko: "[giggles] I should teach you how to be a man, Ta-kun."
Naota: "Yeah, like you know!"
From the dialogue and positions in this scene, "guitar" is obviously implying "penis."

I'm working on a complete analysis that will explain a lot of the metaphors in FLCL - it will be on the site when I'm done..

Feel free to argue this theory.

I couldn't agree more with you kiss_army LOLOL...

Umm... takai003, I'm not sure if that’s really it... See, what gets me is that they have a lot of sexual content in the movie, but overall they're trying to show another thing about Natoa... The fact about him growing up and being an adult... Now, sexuality becomes a big part as we grow older... We all know its a combination of people's sex, their sexual feelings for others, their feelings about themselves as sexual beings, their sexual orientation and their sexual behavior (or if your 12 and reading this that’s what it is briefly :D)...

But what about controlling it...? Is there a possibility that someone young can somehow evade being sexuality active with someone... Even though they have feelings for somebody, and might have sexual preferences about them.... Maybe seeing people throughout his life, both mature and immature, Natoa has developed an attitude that prevents that type of behavior (i.e kissing girls, flirting)... Maybe he doesn't want to bother with his feelings, just "because"...

An example can be seen in episode 1 when Haruko says "You’re the one I saw first". And Naota blushes and shrugs his in almost in disgrace... or gives a cold feeling... And theres more, but you get the idea...

This subject does have a lot of Ambiguity to it though.

To what is the Controlling Image that we are seeing coming out of Naota's head... Is the Guitar the actual representation that is coming out of it..? Just a wild looking guitar, from a scientifically impossible rip (or is it) in time and space, and is just the way we see it noumenaly. Or is it some Phallic Symbol, that indicates hormones or sex organs, suggesting male potency like your saying takai003 ...?

Can there be anything else to this... hmmmm.... I wonder...

readin your post AarokBomB, made me think a lot... because i understood everything you said. i mean, i was 12 4 years ago, but i still know what its like. and you're right, sex & sexuality do have a lot to do with this, no matter who you are. my whole point was that even though sex does have a big role in life, most people dont understand this but there is more to life than sex!! there are actual feeling and its true, that you really dont understand that until you have actually "matured" into a man, & you have finally completed the stage of your childhood. & people can have a meaningful realationship without sex, with them sex is a very small part of it. it's just a way to show how much you love someone...or if not, then it can be completely meaningless. which i think sucks!!! but if you care about somebody enough to live through the hardships of life & go through rough times with this person than that's really all that matters. & i understand now that in fooly cooly, at the beginning naota was a normal 12 year old kid. but gradually matured throughout the series & eventually, understood what it really means to be mature... ya know? anyway, i think what you said was really deep & it's cool cuz i know somethin i didnt think of before^-^ thanx, man

I agree with you once more... And you point out something that I left out!!!! You said "there is more to life than sex!!"... Your right, there is, but its very hard for people to understand that though... Even I go a bit crazy sometimes when I go to a party at my college... Girls today are looking hotter and sexier everyday Hahahah... don't you agree? Well, I'm glad I made sense to you because a lot of people don't think some of the things I've posted so far don't make any sense... But I do try to at least show what I see anyways..

yes, the guns in the fifth episode are also a metaphor for a penis. notice, how Kamon strokes his...and also notice that when Naota's trigger goes off in his head, the horn shoots right through Mamimi's legs

gun=penis=male pride
that's how it is in this episode.

RIGHT TO AN EXTENT

Postby PaniK & SoraH » Mon Apr 03, 2006 8:23 am

I THINK YOU GUYS ARE RIGHT TO AN EXTENT. I BELEIVE THAT IN NAOTA'S CASE EVERYTHING THAT COMES OUT OF HIS HEAD REPRESENTS EVERYTHING HE'S NOT, WHAT HE NEEDS TO MATURE AS A PERSON AND PARTS OF HIS INNER SELF. AT LEAST THAT'S HOW I INTERPRETED IT. SORRY MY MESAGE DIDN'T COME UP THE FIRST TIME SO I WROTE IT AGAIN AND I GUESS NOW I HAVE TWO

thats all definately true, i see how all those are metaphors for something sexual. and that is how life goes, & yes, the girls are gettin' more & more fun 2 look at. lol. but nonetheless... i think the bottom line is that the whole sex thing is a stage in life that you go through until you find what everything is truly about. it was a good message that more people should pay attention to.

Some of you bring up good points... But what about the fused guitar? What does that represent? Does it have to do with attacking Haruko even though he loves her inside?

the fused guitar probably represents sex, lol...but if i'd say wut i thought, i'd be that the fused guitar is a mix between childhood & adulthood, because he was right in the middle of the two at the end of the 6th episode, ya know?...or maybe we're thinkin too much because we're obsessive fans and the creators are like, "dumbasses" and it was just somethin weird he could do with the guiter cuz its anime, & its weird.lol
and ya know flcl was only made so gainex could test out some new equipment..maybe they really didnt put that much thought into the whole thing....maybe we're all a bunch of dumbasses^-^ or not, we'll never know, but its cool to think about
