Just because it's in Space and you talk with aliens make it automatically generic?

all 6 star wars movies.

the whole 'team up with aliens and fight off an evil force' thing is incredibly cliche.

i mean, nearly every sci fi book ever. EVER.

Every movie background you see or every game you plays setting has been done before. The story hasn't been done, but maybe the background.

Using the word cliche for a futuristic genre to a game is incredibly stupid. Yet you are here arguing to me that some game you have never played is cliche. No wonder you lose every single argument here.

It's not just the 'background' it's the underlying driving force for the plot. Speaking of which, though, you're right, the setting is pretty cliche, too.

So you're saying that there has been a movie where a rogue alien spectre goes out and attacks colonies, and a human marine gets to become a spectre and take on the spectre? Eventually figuring out there is a bigger force behind him and the fate of the universe is in his hands? Plus in the second one, a group of collectors go across galaxies and abduct whole towns to fuel reapers that will eventually invade Earth and the rest of the universe. In 2183?

I left out a whole bunch of other things but I'm definitely sure that this story has been totally done before. Bravo guys, yall hit the nail on the head.

Plus yall just called any movie that has aliens or anything else futuristic in it cliche. I would like to know what the underlying force is please?

How ignorant can you be to argue about a game when you haven't even played it?

Setting =/= plot. I will admit, Mass Effect goes into the cliche zone sometimes. But then again, the same could be said about Halo, Fallout, etc., etc. A cliche isn't a bad thing, it's just something that's been defined, a component of a piece of art. I still love Mass Effect, even if it is slightly cliche.

Well there is plenty of stories/movies/games were you have to become what your fighting.

Also, bringing up the marine/underlying force thing isn't helping your cause.

Not saying the game's cliche.

Okay 1. Give me a movie where someone gets a sepctre like job of an alien that went rogue. Don't try to call an archetype cliche.

and 2. Saying anything with a soldier or marine in is cliche is incredibly stupid for you.

You're right. Never seen anything resembling any of that before.

Do you read things in full or do you just read every other word?

I asked a simple question you can not follow. Has that whole paragraph been used before? It's a difficult question I know.

Oh, I'm sorry.

Two stories for you:

John went to the store. There he found oranges, and he decided to grab a whole delicious bushel of them. "Yummy, yummy, yumm, yumm" he proclaimed.

Jack went to the store. There he found apples, and he decided to grab a whole delicious bushel of them. "Yummy, yummy, yumm, yumm" he proclaimed.

Well, not every detail of the stories matches, therefore I suppose they have no connection.

Nice display of story telling. How about doing that exact same thing with my description of ME and some other story.

Go ahead.

Rogue alien - Cortanna.

Invading aliens - The covenant.

Space Marine - Master cheif.

Universe as we know it hanging in the balance? Check.

Unknown overlying force?
Check.

Eventual reveal of overlying force?
Check.

It isn't a bad story or anything, and I find it rather interesting and emmersive. But it's remisce to deny the fact it has set-pieces (I say set-pieces 'cause I know there's a chance somebody will pop up and be like Heroic Journey hurr durr.) that have been used in a very like fashion more then one time.

Now let's see the meaning of cliche.

Cliche - A cliché or cliche (pronounced klē-ˈshā) is a saying, expression, idea, or element of an artistic work which has been overused to the point of losing its original meaning or effect, rendering it a stereotype, especially when at some earlier time it was considered meaningful or novel. ...

Has ME's story ever lost its meaning? No, it wouldn't be so praised if it had.

Now for ME's story to ever lose its meaning and to become a cliche, you would need to keep listing elements of my description of ME and comparing that to other stories like you did just then (but multiple times).

I like how people use the word cliche and not really know what it exactly means. Have ME's elements in its story ever been used before, in a different way, yes. Would that make it cliche? No.
