FLCLW VOTES 2012! CHOOSE YOUR NEXT MOD

Postby takai » Mon Jan 16, 2012 2:47 am

Hey, everyone.

First of all, happy new years! It's hard to believe how many years we've survived here at the forums. We're approaching 7 years old and still hanging in there. It is time, once again, to choose another moderator to add to the team. Following tradition, the moderator will be chosen democratically.

HOW TO VOTE
Send a message to the account FLCLW Votes 2012:
memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=4704
Include in your message the usernames of 3 people who you want to be the next moderator. You can, indeed, use one of these votes on yourself. Whoever has the most votes will be given mod powers and be added to the dream team:
memberlist.php?mode=leaders

PLEASE NOTE
When you vote, please consider who you think would genuinely add value to the community, who would be invested in the community, and who would do a fair and responsible job.

Voting closes two weeks from today. Good luck!

I find it silly how official you try to sound Takai when you're really only talking to like 10 people who most of them you've known for about 4 or 5 years.

It is what it is. I like to keep things official. The site has been around for 6 and a half years, which is a really long time in internet years. And if only 10 people vote...great. It only takes two to vote. The point is that we need a moderator and this is the best way to do it. 8)

The bots are getting crazy out of hand again. How about some preventative measures to prevent mass posting?

Captchas, post per (time) limits, etc. You also might restrict registrations to a certain number a month or something. Making it to where a member has to have a certain number of legit posts before being able to post in off-topic/the lounge would help too.

A number of small un-obtrusive measures would help more than any one single large measure would.

1. Do not, DO NOT, put a time restriction on posts. That is the most infuriating thing.

2. While restricting registration might... err, help... I don't think we get enough new members for that to really help.

In all honesty, from a guy who admined a board, the only way to deal with spam is to have a dedicated staff. Sadly, this does require trust. Of course, it also an admin or someone with close to admin powers who is around enough.

You couldn't make the users require a certain amount of posts before going into the Lounge or Off Topic because nothing left to post about in any of the other sections that are FLCL related and I would rather not see the posts in the "what are you listening to" thread sky rocket.

1. Making it to where a member couldn't make 20 posts in the span of a second wouldn't have much of an effect on regular users, unless they were spamming anyway.

2. It would help restrict new bots from registering.

3. The things I mentioned would help keep things under control till we do get a decent moderator, and help to prevent the moderator from getting too swamped to effectively take care of things.

Ookm, there's also the anime/manga section, and plenty to talk about in entertainment other than that thread.

If I signed up here and couldn't post in the off topic / lounge right away I would probably be like "wtfffff." and leave.

Just sayin'.

One of the other boards I am on only allows new members to register at a certain time and date each month and that seems to all but eliminate the problem of spammers. Don't know if that idea would work here.

1. What bot is posting that much? None.

2. It would restrict members from registering too.

3. No, they would just hamstring an already vicariously active forum.

The bots are posting at a much higher rate than regular members are, especially when it comes to making new threads.

More bots are joining the forum than regular members recently.

The measures could be temporary till the new moderator gets settled in and figures out how shit works.

Takai probably won't read this, but I feel it'd be best if we had more than one mod. Y'know, in case we elect a mod and then said mod dies in a car crash/alcohol poisoning related incident the next day.
