Mass spam also kills sites. And really, we aren't trying to be a huge popular forum with new people every day. We've always been slow, with a tiny trickle of new users every now and then, even when the forum was at its biggest. The closed registration can end after we get mods, but there does need to be some sort of measure to keep mods from joining. Updated captcha systems, etc, will help for a while.

Even huge forums limit the amount of posts a user can make in a certain amount of time. Places like Gaia and 4chan have had these features forever and have tons of users.

And we've already pretty much "hit it big". Face it, this forum is themed after a tv show that has gone past its peak. I'm looking at this situation as a member of a small community forum that isn't likely to ever really grow all that large. Very few of the new members we get stick around for longer than a month, even without the bot problems.

Every time there's a re-airing of flcl we'll get some new members. They'll stick around for a while till they find out that flcl isn't really talked about anymore, then leave. The ones that stick around will either be idiots that don't get it or people that want to become part of the community.

Yes, the things I'm suggesting could have a negative impact on growth. In the end, the point I'm trying to make is that we aren't growing very much at all, and the bots are scaring off existing members, AND effecting growth.

I never said we are growing, or that we will. My point has remained that you're suggestions will kill what little trickle we get. That trickle is all that keeps life in this forum.

Sorry, I should have been more clear about what I meant... We are still getting a new mod(s) but I am just implementing some of your suggestions in the meantime as well, like registration-approval.

It's definitely not convenient to have to approve new members but it will at least stop the spam for now and put the focus on people who actually post or want to post here. Hopefully we can find a better solution in the future...
