Black wings?

Discuss the metaphorical and hidden meanings behind the series.

Black wings?

Postby Yahoo » Fri Jul 21, 2006 11:35 am

After wathing Canti going around with black wings, and halo attached to his head in second OVA I was all like "Wow! They are making fun of "Haibane Renmei"! Cool!". Everything matched perfectly:
Canti attached halo to his head just like main character of HR in first episode. He had black wings, just like... Some other character from HR (I wont spoil fun for those who havent seen this great anime). There was also a thing with being pure and stuff. Those who seen Haibane Renmei will agree with me that it can't be just a coincidence.

BUT

Haibane Renmei was made in 2002, and FLCL in 2000... Uh.
Either FLCL staff build a time machine and cheked out the future anime series to make laugh off, or Haibane Renmei was inspired by FLCL... And that doesn't make much sense to me. These shows are like fire and water. Complete oposites.

There's a shot of main characters:

What do you think? Maybe I made mistake somewhere?

Sorry for pointless thread ;)

---[edit]---
Oh! And here's something to make this threat less pointless:
I found remarkable similarity in the giant hand in OAV5 & 6 and "Hand of God" from Kentarou Miura "Berserk". Here's a pic:

Hmm... seems kinda iffy to me. There's no doubt that FLCL makes fun of some shows. My favorite was the South Park one. Absolutely brilliant.

But the hands as a Berserk reference? Maybe.

Very observant of you. However, black wings halos are somewhat of an anime cliché. It has been done many times before. Canti's could still be a direct reference to a specific anime, but I don't know what it would be. In any case it is definitely an allusion to anime [as is a lot in FLCL].

In more general terms, Canti's fake halo and wings could symbolize the Japanese tradition of Shinto and the worship of Kami (comparable to the Christian religion and god). With Shinto, there is no one “God,” it is more like a path or idle that an individual must. This would explain why Mamimi says “I saw a god today.” Or perhaps she meant “I saw my god today,” as she idles the dark angel.

As for the Hand of God, that’s very cool. What significance does it play in Berserk?
Have a question about FLCL? FAQ it, then ask it.

To be honest, I don't remember if it have any significance. I have read the series several times, but it was a long time ago.
Only thing I remember is the hand has always appeared during "eclipse" - something like party of demons, where new demon king was born/reborn.
It's kinda like "rebrith"(escape) of Atomsk in 6th episode.

Thanks. That makes a lot more sense than my theory ;)

ACTUALLY..... Earlier in the epsiode she was wearing those same wings when she was being the "First Class Space Control Officer". Canti must've gotten into them and was just having fun or something...

I'm sure no one is going to read this, but to answer the original question, no.

FLCL Aired first from 2000-2001

Haibane Renmei aired in 2002

Well, in the manga upon summoning Canti, Canti is made up as the Mamimi's videogame character "Black Fire Angel, Lord Canti" in the eyes of Mamimi before being knocked in the head by Haruko

could have something to do with the wings and halo

im with Geokido. in the manga there was this whole confusing page with a quote i believe that was from mamimi's videogame.

enosville the town of satan. Because of the ustoppable growth, it slowly absorbs the world. You are a servant of the, Black Fire Angel Lord Canti. You don't know sleep, You are not familiar with day or night. It is your task to prevent the expansion of Enosville. If you are careless, even for a moment Ensosville will grow beyond unstoppable limits.
